Natal
hexagram.
There is a hexagram that can be attributed to every day, based upon the
I Ching (the Book of Changes) and astrological calculations. (A hexagram
is a set of six lines, like the image at the top of this page, which is
associated to a certain meaning.) |
The calculation for this hexagram is based on cycles: periods of time
that repeat over and over again.
The starting point of these cycles is said to have been about a million
years ago, at the winter solstice, when the sun, the moon, all the
planets and the earth were in a straight line at midnight.
There are several time cycles that contribute to defining the hexagram
attributed to a certain moment in time, while the hexagram also varies
depending on where one is located.
There are cycles for the years, the months, days and hours, which are
organized in sexagenary cycles that are interacted with ten celestial
stems and horary branches.
When a person is born, all this makes it possible to attribute a certain
hexagram to the person's birth, which will give indications for that
person's entire life.
The Pre Heaven and Later Heaven
Hexagrams.
The hexagram that is attributed to a person at his/her birth is called
the Pre Heaven Hexagram. This hexagram also has a controlling line,
which not only gives more precise indications on the person and his/her
life, but which also determines all further computations for the
subcycles such as those for the yearly hexagrams and daily hexagrams.
The Pre Heaven Hexagram is attributed to the early part of someone's
life. The Later Heaven Hexagram is attributed to the latter part of
someone's life. The moment when the Later Heaven Hexagram starts depends
on the amount of yang and/or yin lines of the Pre Heaven Hexagram and
occurs the earliest at age 37 and the latest at age 55.
Why do some persons have two
sets of natal hexagrams?
Some people have two sets of natal hexagrams - that is two Pre Heaven
and Later Heaven Hexagrams - while others have only one set.
The reason for this is that the astrological forces overlap certain
cycles. More specifically, and generally speaking, those persons who are
born between the 21st (end of the month) and the 6th (beginning of the
next month) will see more or less the influence of one of two sets of
hexagrams.
This overlapping period varies from month to month and from year to
year, which means that it can vary a few days.
Those persons who are born between (generally speaking) the 6th and the
21st will have a single set of natal hexagrams.
Yearly
horoscopes.
Based on the Pre Heaven and Later Heaven Hexagram it's possible to
attribute a hexagram (and its controlling line) for each year of a
person's life.
It has to be noted that this year is slightly different than the common
western Gregorian year. The year for I Ching astrology starts at the
winter solstice, the culminating point of winter, which falls on the
22nd or 23rd of December.
Therefore, no matter when a person has his/her birthday, his/her
astrological age increases every time at winter solstice.
This means for ex. that when a person is born on July 1st, at winter
solstice that person will begin the 2nd "astrological year" of his/her
life, while this year will still be unfolding on the following July 1st
(his/her 1st birthday), and he/she will begin his/her 3rd astrological
year at the next winter solstice (when still only aged 1 year, during
his/her 2nd year counting from birth).
The year used for I Ching astrology is also different than the one used
for Zi Ping Ba Zi, Zi Wei Dou Shu or "Four Pillar" astrology, which
considers the year beginning at "the Coming of Spring" which is usually
on February 4th.
Daily horoscopes.
Once the yearly hexagram has been computed, it's possible to determine
the hexagram (and its controlling line) for every day of that year.
Daily hexagrams come in most cases in 6-day cycles. This means that a
hexagram is attributed to 6 specific days (in a row) while the strong
(changing) line for the first day of that cycle will be the first line
of the hexagram (i.e. the bottom line), and each day moves up one
position; i.e. the strong line for day 2 will be line 2, for day 3 it
will be line 3, a.s.o....
